Soul Eater and the Runaway Devil

A man claiming to be a 300-year-old vampire, and a 12-year-old girl, fell into a forbidden love which left the girl’s entire family murdered – a dark tale that concludes with a disturbing twist.

Besotted with death

There is nothing more disturbing than a child who commits pre-meditated murder, except perhaps a child who commits murder with an adult boyfriend who believed he was a vampire.

In Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, on 23rd April 2006, 12-year-old Jasmine Richardson and her 23-year-old boyfriend Jeremy Steinke killed three members of Jasmine’s family. They had spent many weeks planning the murders in revenge for Jasmine’s parents disapproving of their relationship.

Jasmine looked older for her age and was known to go out with friends to rock concerts, and it was there she allegedly met the 23-year-old Jeremy, just three months before the murders. Jasmine set up user profiles on the Vampire Freaks forum, and a Canadian forum and messaging board called Nexopia.

On both sites she listed her age as 15 and used it as a way to converse with Jeremy, and their relationship grew to the point where Jasmine became besotted with the idea of murder, propagated by a love of blood and a fascination with human anatomy. She went under the username of Runaway Devil, while Jeremy used Soul Eater, among others.

Jeremy too had some unusual preferences. He was known to enjoy the taste of blood and carried around a small vial of his own blood around his neck for whenever the hunger struck. He told his friends that he was a 300-year-old vampire, lost in time, just trying to survive in the new world.

Natural Born Killers

When Jasmine’s parents found out about the burgeoning relationship, they tried to stop Jasmine seeing Jeremy, but it didn’t end well. That fascination with blood, led Jasmine to believe her parents needed to die as punishment for telling her what to do and trying to end her relationship.

Jeremy was fascinated with the Oliver Stone movie Natural Born Killers, about a young couple who kill the lead female’s parents then go on a killing spree. He believed that he and his new young girlfriend should use the film as a starting point for their life together.

They planned the murder of Jasmine’s family and thought of it as the right thing to do, to rid themselves of imposing mortals who would do nothing to stop their forbidden love.

In some of her messages to Jeremy, Jasmine shared photographs of herself holding a gun and posing in gothic makeup. The love between them was seemingly growing stronger in her heart. Just hours before the murders, she posted; ‘welcome to my tragic end’.

The same morning, at his trailer, Jeremy watched Natural Born Killers again. He told his friends that he and Jasmine should go about their plans for murder in the same way. He also claimed the film to be the greatest love story of all time.
